INTRODUCTION. Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) cultivation in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, dates back to the 19 th were established at low planting densities, i.e., trees haSince the mid 20 th century, however, all the commercial stands were established in x m spacing ( trees ha-1), based on the model production system of the cacao region in Bahia.   Cacao trees usually grow below altitudes of 1, feet in areas that receive about 4 inches of rain per month.
